Materials Solutions Ltd, a leading additive manufacturing (AM) company, faced a critical challenge: removing stubborn powder residues left by the AM printing process. The metal components it produces are highly sensitive and prone to staining during cleaning. To solve this issue, the company turned to MecWash Systems Ltd, a Tewkesbury-based cleaning specialist.
The Cleaning Challenge in Additive Manufacturing
Materials Solutions specializes in high-strength, high-temperature metal components. With nearly two decades of experience in metal AM, the company understands the complexities of the materials it works with. However, manual cleaning methods often slowed production and risked damaging intricate parts—especially those with internal channels or lattice structures.
“Before partnering with MecWash, we relied on manual cleaning, which was time-consuming and sometimes led to component damage,” said a spokesperson for Materials Solutions. “MecWash’s expertise and tailored solution have significantly improved our efficiency.”
A Custom Cleaning Solution
Dave Pawson, MecWash’s in-house chemist, explained that incomplete residue removal—such as leftover powder, dye penetrant, or coolant—can compromise a part’s performance. “We analyzed samples carefully to develop a process that ensures complete residue removal without harming the components,” he said.
Paul Jarratt, MecWash’s sales manager, added that after consultations, the MWX600 system was selected. This system combines:
- Ultrasonic cleaning
- High-flow washing
- Extended rinsing
- Vacuum drying
With a 250kg load capacity, the MWX600 meets the demands of Materials Solutions’ production scale.
Transforming AM Cleaning Processes
Materials Solutions praised MecWash’s chemical expertise, calling it “transformative” for their operations. The new system has eliminated manual cleaning bottlenecks while ensuring consistent, high-quality results.
For MecWash, the project was another opportunity to innovate. “We love tackling complex washing challenges,” Pawson said. “This collaboration proves how tailored solutions can revolutionize manufacturing efficiency.”
Looking Ahead
The partnership highlights the growing need for specialized cleaning in AM, where precision and reliability are critical. As additive manufacturing expands, solutions like MecWash’s will play a key role in maintaining quality and productivity.
