The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) in Hereford has marked a key milestone as its first group of students steps into the workforce, securing positions at major companies like Balfour Beatty, Kier Group plc, Mondelēz International, and Oakwrights. This achievement highlights the success of NMITE’s innovative approach to engineering education.
Launched in September 2021, NMITE’s mission is to transform engineering education by offering degrees that combine hands-on learning with real-world projects. The institute’s unique model aims to ensure students gain practical experience from the start of their studies.
James Newby, President and CEO of NMITE, expressed his pride: “Our first graduates are the result of years of hard work and innovation in education. Their success showcases the effectiveness of our program, which focuses on practical skills, problem-solving, and collaboration with industry leaders. These students took a chance on a new institution, and their achievements demonstrate the value of our approach. As they enter the workforce, we are confident that NMITE’s reputation will continue to grow.”
A Proud Achievement for Industry Partners
Tom Newton, Engineering and Design Director at Balfour Beatty, also celebrated the milestone: “This is a proud moment for everyone at Balfour Beatty. Over the past year, we’ve worked closely with NMITE, contributing to the curriculum and supporting teaching modules. Seeing the first group of students begin their careers proves the success of our collaboration. Together, we’ve opened doors for young people and equipped them with the skills needed to thrive in the industry.”
NMITE graduates have already secured roles both locally and across the country, demonstrating the institute’s commitment to diversity and its ability to nurture future engineers from all backgrounds.
Real-World Skills and Accelerated Degrees
The first graduates are a testament to NMITE’s mission to bridge the gap between traditional engineering education and the evolving needs of the workforce. The institute offers an accelerated MEng degree, along with a BEng, allowing students to enter the job market sooner. This model also provides an alternative for those who might not have the financial means to pursue a traditional master’s degree, giving them access to a degree that prepares them for the workforce.
With more graduates set to join the workforce in the coming months, NMITE continues to prove its impact on the future of engineering education and its commitment to producing work-ready graduates.
