ABB to Spin Off Robotics Division, Eyes Stock Market Debut by Mid-2026

by sthv

ABB has announced plans to separate its Robotics division and list it as an independent company by the second quarter of 2026. The proposal will go to shareholders for approval at the company’s Annual General Meeting in 2026.

According to ABB’s board, the spin-off will help both ABB and the new Robotics company sharpen their focus. Each business will be able to concentrate on its own strengths. The move is also expected to improve how resources are used, deliver more value to customers, and make it easier to attract skilled workers. ABB will continue to focus on its main areas: electrification and automation.

ABB Robotics develops advanced automation tools, including robots, mobile platforms, software, and artificial intelligence solutions. These technologies support industries by boosting productivity, solving labor shortages, and helping businesses reach their sustainability goals. More than 80% of the division’s products are powered by software or AI.

The Robotics unit has about 7,000 employees. In 2024, it earned $2.3 billion in revenue, making up about 7% of ABB’s total income. Its factories are located across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and it uses a regional manufacturing model to meet global demand.

ABB Chairman Peter Voser said the Robotics business serves markets that differ from those of ABB’s other divisions. “Separating the two will better position both for long-term success,” he stated.

ABB’s CEO Morten Wierod highlighted the division’s solid financial performance. He said the Robotics unit has achieved double-digit profit margins in most quarters since 2019. The business is well-funded and produces strong cash flow. He also noted that market conditions have started to stabilize after past disruptions from supply chain issues and a surge in early orders.

If shareholders approve the plan, the separation will happen through a share distribution. Existing ABB shareholders will receive shares in the new company—tentatively named “ABB Robotics”—based on their current holdings in ABB.

After the spin-off, ABB’s Machine Automation unit, which now sits within the Robotics & Discrete Automation division, will be merged into the Process Automation business area. This change aims to create stronger links in software and control systems, especially for hybrid industries.

The Machine Automation unit is known for its powerful programmable logic controllers (PLCs), motion systems, industrial transport tools, and vision software. It will keep its current leadership and continue to operate within ABB’s decentralized structure.

ABB is a global leader in electrification and automation. It has about 110,000 employees and operates in over 100 countries. The company uses engineering and digital technology to help clients become more efficient, cut emissions, and increase productivity. ABB is listed on both the SIX Swiss Exchange (ABBN) and Nasdaq Stockholm (ABB), and it has been in business for more than 140 years.
