His Holiness, Olumba Olumba Obu, the leader of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, has launched a 245-kilowatt solar power project at the church’s headquarters in Calabar.
The installation marks the church’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing energy-efficient technology. At the commissioning event, Olumba Obu highlighted the importance of transitioning to greener energy sources.
Fred Obu, representing the leader, explained that the new solar project would harness clean, renewable energy from the sun. This will reduce the church’s reliance on fossil fuels, minimize generator noise, and cut down on harmful emissions, aligning with sustainability goals.
“This solar project is a reflection of our dedication to responsible energy use and environmental care,” Fred Obu said. “We are proud to set an example for a more sustainable future and thank the Holy Father for making this possible.”
Princess Ibum Olumba Obu, the BCS project director for Green Energy, emphasized that the solar switch would not only offer environmental benefits but also result in long-term financial savings. She added that the move would reduce the risks of fluctuating energy prices and encourage similar initiatives within the community. “This is a transition from reliance on generators to the brilliance of solar energy, entering the rhythm of divine alignment,” she said.
Project manager Chukuyenum Uzoelum noted that the solar installation would save the church significantly on its diesel costs. Currently, the church spends around N21 million on diesel monthly, amounting to an annual expense of approximately N252 million.
