Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a leading global supplier of semiconductor solutions, has formed a strategic partnership with India’s Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY). This collaboration aims to promote innovation in VLSI design and embedded semiconductor systems. The goal is to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem by supporting startups and academic institutions.
Alongside this partnership, Renesas opened larger office facilities in Bengaluru and Noida. These new offices will support the company’s expanding research and development teams. This move shows Renesas’ strong commitment to technology growth and talent development in India.
As part of the partnership, Renesas and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a scientific organization under MeitY, signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs). These agreements are under the Chips to Startup (C2S) program. The program helps Indian startups by providing important tools and resources to speed up product development. This effort supports the Make in India initiative, which encourages local innovation and manufacturing. By improving the technical skills of startups, the partnership aims to build a strong ecosystem for semiconductor and electronics development in India.
The agreements also focus on stronger cooperation between industry and academia. They promote innovation-driven learning and practical skill development. This approach encourages students to think with a product-oriented mindset. It aims to prepare future engineers and technologists who can contribute to India’s growing semiconductor and technology sectors.
The announcement event included key officials such as Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology. Malini Narayanamoorthi, India Country Manager and Vice President of MID Engineering at Renesas, participated along with other senior leaders from partner companies. Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata joined the event remotely.
India is a crucial market for Renesas. The company aims to generate more than 10 percent of its global revenue from India by 2030. Recently, Renesas has entered several collaborations, including an OSAT facility in Gujarat with CG Power and Stars Microelectronics, and a research partnership with IIT Hyderabad. Renesas also plans to increase its workforce in India to 1,000 employees by the end of 2025.
Under the new MOUs, Renesas will provide startups with development boards and access to Altium Designer, a top PCB design platform. This will help startups improve their engineering skills. For academic institutions, Renesas will offer development tools, PCB design training, and access to Altium 365 cloud services. These resources will support hands-on learning and encourage students to become product-focused engineers. The C2S program currently works with over 250 academic and research institutions across India, as well as about 15 startups. This helps build a strong foundation for semiconductor innovation in the country.
Renesas has also upgraded its offices in Bengaluru and Noida. The Bengaluru office is now the company’s largest in India, with about 500 employees from Renesas, Altium, and Part Analytics. It includes design labs and collaborative spaces to encourage innovation.
The Noida office brings together engineering and business teams to speed up the development of high-performance computing solutions, especially for the automotive sector. This location focuses on enhancing capabilities around Renesas’ R-Car system-on-chip platforms. It fits with the company’s global plan to improve engineering collaboration across countries.
