Volvo Recalls Over 14,000 Electric and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles Due to Brake Issue

by sthv

Volvo has announced a recall of 14,014 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States. The recall is due to a potential brake failure that may occur under certain conditions. While brake failure is serious, it only happens in specific and limited situations.

The issue is caused by a software problem in the brake control module. It affects some 2020 to 2026 models running software version 3.5.14.

The brakes may fail if the vehicle coasts downhill in certain driving modes—specifically, when a plug-in hybrid coasts in “B” mode for more than 1 minute and 40 seconds without using the brake or accelerator pedals. The same can happen when a fully electric vehicle uses one-pedal drive mode under the same conditions.

Among the affected vehicles are about 5,000 units of the 2025 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid. The recall covers several models including the S60, V60, S90, XC60, XC90, XC40, and C40 plug-in hybrids, as well as the EX40 and EC40 fully electric vehicles.

To fix the problem, Volvo has released a software update that can be installed over-the-air or at authorized repair shops. A Volvo spokesperson advised customers who have not yet received the update to avoid using “B” mode or one-pedal driving while driving.
