Indexel Engineering to Introduce 50 MWh of U.S.-Made Sodium-Ion Batteries in India

by sthv

Indexel Engineering, a leading EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) company based in Rajasthan, has partnered with U.S. battery developer Unigrid to supply 50 megawatt-hours of sodium-ion batteries in India. These batteries, developed and manufactured by Unigrid, will be deployed in key industrial zones, renewable energy projects, and microgrid systems across the country. The first installations are expected to begin in the second half of 2025, with initial focus on western states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

Anushka Singhal, head of Indexel’s energy division, commented, “Unigrid’s technology is reliable and tailored for India’s environmental needs. Sodium-ion batteries offer a safer, more affordable option compared to lithium-ion storage.”

Sodium-ion batteries are becoming a promising choice for large-scale energy storage. They are non-flammable, operate efficiently in extreme temperatures, ranging from -40°C to 60°C, and are made from materials that are widely available and affordable. These qualities make sodium-ion batteries well-suited to India’s energy transition, especially in regions with high temperatures and challenging conditions.

Darren H. S. Tan, co-founder and CEO of Unigrid, added, “India’s energy market is growing rapidly and is focused on innovation. We believe our sodium-ion battery systems can play a significant role in supporting the country’s shift toward clean and reliable energy. Our partnership with Indexel Engineering ensures we have a strong local partner.”
