Metelec, a leading UK copper distributor, has opened a new logistics center in Belfast to better serve customers in Northern Ireland. The facility, operated in partnership with ARO Logistics, is located in Newtownabbey and spans 36,000 square feet.
The company, one of the UK’s top suppliers of copper bars, busbars, and components, already runs a 47,973-square-foot headquarters in the West Midlands and a 35,000-square-foot distribution hub in Tullamore, Ireland. The new Northern Ireland site will speed up deliveries for local clients while maintaining service for customers in the Republic of Ireland.
Faster Service, Broader Reach
The expansion cuts delivery times for Northern Irish customers and provides tariff advantages when moving stock between England and Northern Ireland. Andrew Ellingham, a sales veteran with 20 years of experience—including a role at Tata Steel UK—will lead operations in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
“This facility will help us grow our £10 million Irish business while improving service,” Ellingham said. “We’ll focus on power infrastructure, data centers, and renewable energy, but also explore new markets. Metelec has a strong vision, and I’m excited to drive this expansion.”
Meeting Rising Copper Demand
Managing Director Kevin Draper highlighted Northern Ireland’s industrial strength as a key factor in the expansion. “This facility, along with Andrew’s leadership, will support our shift from a traditional supplier to a full supply chain partner,” he said.
Global copper demand is surging due to electrification trends, including electric vehicles (EVs), data centers, and renewable energy projects. Metelec’s partnership with Gindre Duchavany, Europe’s largest copper extruded bar manufacturer, ensures reliable supply and component production.
The Newtownabbey center marks a strategic step in Metelec’s growth, reinforcing its presence across Ireland and the UK.
