General Motors (GM) has announced an $888 million investment in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant. This funding will support the production of the sixth generation of GM’s V-8 engines, which power full-size trucks and SUVs.
The new generation of engines is designed to offer stronger performance than current models. It will also improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. These gains are made possible through innovations in combustion and thermal management.
Over the past 15 years, GM has strategically invested in its manufacturing facilities. In January 2023, the company revealed a $500 million investment in its Flint Engine plant to produce the same sixth generation of V-8 engines. That investment was the largest GM has ever made in a single engine plant. With the latest announcement, Tonawanda becomes the second GM propulsion plant to produce this advanced engine generation.
Mary Barra, GM’s chair and CEO, said, “Our significant investments in GM’s Tonawanda Propulsion plant show our commitment to strengthening American manufacturing and supporting jobs in the USA.”
The investment will fund new machinery, equipment, tools, and renovations to the facility. Tara Wasik, plant director at Tonawanda, commented, “This investment marks an exciting new chapter for our plant. For generations, our team has demonstrated its commitment to manufacturing excellence.”
Currently, the Tonawanda plant continues to produce the fifth generation of GM’s V-8 engines. Production of the sixth generation is scheduled to begin in 2027.
