Verdagy to Supply Hydrogen Fuel for Mainspring Energy’s Linear Generators in California

by sthv

Verdagy, a leading company in clean hydrogen electrolysis, has partnered with Mainspring Energy, Inc. to supply hydrogen fuel for a new power generation project in Moss Landing, California.

Verdagy’s plant in Moss Landing has been operating for four years. It has logged more than 20,000 hours using commercial electrolysis cells and produced over 200 tons of hydrogen. The plant runs fully automatically, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This allows Mainspring to have a constant supply of low-cost hydrogen fuel for its power generators.

This partnership creates a steady hydrogen fuel source for Mainspring’s fuel-flexible linear generators. It also gives Verdagy a reliable onsite customer for the hydrogen and electricity it produces, supporting the operation of its electrolyzers. Both companies plan to start operations by summer 2025.

Marty Neese, CEO of Verdagy, said, “Verdagy and Mainspring Energy are showing how to improve energy resilience for the electrical grid, data centers, and other critical uses. Our collaboration is a strong example of clean, flexible power solutions available onsite.”

Using its experience in large-scale clean hydrogen production, Verdagy is now working to lower costs by converting hydrogen back into power and reusing it in the facility.

Shannon Miller, CEO and founder of Mainspring, added, “This deal is a great chance for Mainspring to demonstrate our linear generator’s ability to run on hydrogen. It also allows Verdagy to prove its industrial-grade hydrogen production is highly reliable. We are excited to partner with Verdagy to show the important role hydrogen can play in power generation.”

By using hydrogen produced onsite to power Mainspring’s linear generators, the project highlights how low-carbon energy can be used directly where it is needed. This approach is important for improving energy reliability in areas with limited grid capacity and in mission-critical environments. The co-location of hydrogen production and consumption is vital as grid constraints increase.
