Finning UK & Ireland has provided a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) generator set to Polymer Matters, a recycling company based in Omagh. The new installation aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce reliance on traditional power sources at the site.
Polymer Matters specialises in producing high-quality, food-grade recycled resin, mainly for the dairy packaging industry. As the facility lacks access to mains gas, it required a reliable and independent power solution. Finning stepped in with a Cat CG170B-20 LPG generator set, which now supplies electricity to the entire site, including lighting, pumps, and the key washing system that processes recycled plastics.
The generator set, which produces 1.8 megawatts of power, is among the first LPG-fuelled units delivered by Finning. It plays a crucial role in helping Polymer Matters recycle plastic milk bottles into new packaging materials. This supports the circular economy by reducing waste and reusing valuable resources.
Martin Byrne, Sales Manager – Power Solutions at Finning UK & Ireland, said the installation addresses a unique operational need.
“Providing the right power solution is vital for efficiency,” Byrne said. “Polymer Matters needed a system that didn’t rely on a mains gas supply. The CG170B-20 LPG generator offers stable, site-wide power, helping them maintain productivity.”
The genset is designed to perform with up to 45% electrical efficiency and can generate up to 2,300 kilowatts of electrical power. Its compact footprint allows businesses to maximise space while still meeting high energy demands.
Byrne added that the benefits extend beyond simple power delivery.
“The genset uses about 0.15 grams of lubricant per kilowatt-hour,” he said. “This can save up to 3,000 litres of lube oil each year compared to similar units. It also has long maintenance intervals—up to 80,000 hours—which helps cut costs and reduce downtime.”
The Cat CG170B-20 is also adaptable. Although it currently runs on LPG, it can operate on natural gas if needed. This flexibility means customers can choose the fuel that best suits their location and energy strategy.
The installation strengthens the partnership between Finning and Polymer Matters. The two companies have also signed a 10-year maintenance agreement. This long-term support plan includes flexible payment options, fixed costs, and component coverage. It is designed to help Polymer Matters manage expenses while ensuring reliable equipment performance.
This project highlights Finning’s ability to deliver tailored energy solutions across industries and fuel types, helping businesses stay productive and efficient even in challenging conditions.
