Kioxia Corporation, a global leader in memory solutions, has introduced its new KIOXIA CM9 Series PCIe® 5.0 NVMe™ solid-state drives (SSDs). This release marks a major step forward in enterprise storage technology. These SSDs are the first to use Kioxia’s 8th generation BiCS FLASH™ TLC-based 3D flash memory. They feature a new CMOS Bonded to Array (CBA) design. This technology improves power efficiency, performance, storage capacity, and sustainability. It also doubles the capacity per flash device.
Modern applications such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computing require faster and more efficient storage. The KIOXIA CM9 Series SSDs are designed to meet these needs. They deliver high performance while reducing power use and operational costs. This makes them ideal for modern data centers.
The CM9 Series SSDs support several advanced technologies. These include PCIe® 5.0, NVMe™ 2.0, NVMe-MI™ 1.2c, and the OCP Datacenter NVMe™ SSD 2.5 standard. They come in two sizes: 2.5-inch and E3.S form factors. Both versions support dual-port connections for better reliability and redundancy. The drives offer two endurance options to suit different workloads: one for read-intensive use with 1 drive write per day (DWPD), and one for mixed use with 3 DWPD.
In terms of speed, the CM9 Series delivers excellent performance. They can reach up to 14.8 GB/s for sequential reads and 11 GB/s for sequential writes (using 128 KiB blocks at a queue depth of 32). For random tasks, they achieve up to 3,400 KIOPS at QD512 and 800 KIOPS at QD32 for 4 KiB operations. Storage capacity goes up to 61.44 TB for the 2.5-inch drives and 30.72 TB for the E3.S drives. This makes the CM9 Series suitable for enterprises that need both large capacity and high speed.
Compared to the previous generation, these new SSDs offer major performance gains. Random write speed is 65% faster. Random read speed has increased by 55%. Sequential write speed has improved by 95%. Sequential read speed is up 55%, and sequential write efficiency has grown by 75%. These improvements make the CM9 Series well suited for data-heavy applications.
Kioxia is currently offering samples of the CM9 Series to selected customers. The drives will also be showcased at Dell Technologies World, held from May 19 to May 22 in Las Vegas.
Kioxia is a top provider of memory solutions. The company develops, manufactures, and sells flash memory and SSDs. It invented BiCS FLASH™ 3D flash memory, which is used in many industries. These include smartphones, personal computers, automotive systems, data centers, and AI applications. Kioxia’s history goes back to Toshiba’s invention of NAND flash memory in 1987. The company continues to lead innovation in memory technology for a connected world.
