Runaki Revolution Brings 24-Hour Electricity and Cleaner Air to Kurdistan Homes

by sthv

A major change is happening across the Kurdistan Region. The “Runaki” (Light) Project is now providing 24-hour electricity to thousands of homes. This has replaced the noisy diesel generators with steady, reliable power. As a result, the air has become much cleaner.

More than 750 diesel generators have been shut down. This has reduced pollution equal to emissions from 126,000 cars. The project is reshaping both the environment and urban life in the region.

Where blackouts and thick smoke from generators were once common, many neighborhoods now enjoy continuous power and fresher air.

Isa Othman, a local resident, spoke with Kurdistan24 about the changes. “For years, the generator was right behind our house. Its loud noise kept my children awake at night. But now, with electricity all day and night, we sleep peacefully without noise or problems.”

The Runaki Project has reached over 43 neighborhoods. More than 600,000 people are benefiting directly from it.

Another resident, Omar Mawloud Ahmad, highlighted both environmental and financial improvements. “The noise and smoke from the generator affected us a lot, and the environment was always dirty. Before, we paid two bills—one for national electricity and another for the generator. Now, I only pay one bill, and last month it was less than 40,000 dinars.”

The environmental benefits are clear. Diesel generators have long been a major cause of air pollution and health problems in Kurdistan’s cities.

“In my view, even if generators were shut down twice as much as they are now, the environment would still get better,” said resident Omed Ahmad. “The smoke and soot from these machines pollute the air and harm people’s lungs.”

By removing so many generators, the Runaki Project is not only improving energy access but also helping the environment recover. Streets once filled with smoke now enjoy clearer skies. Communities are starting to see better health as air quality improves.

The success of the Runaki Project is becoming a key part of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s plans for development. In places where power outages were normal, the project has brought stability, peace, and a cleaner living environment.

As the project expands, it stands out as a major achievement in public service and environmental progress. It lights the way toward a more sustainable and healthier future for Kurdistan.
