Sony has quietly released a revised version of its FX3 full-frame cinema camera. The new model, named the FX3a, does not bring a major upgrade but instead includes a small hardware change aimed at keeping up with current manufacturing standards.
The only visible update in the FX3a is a new rear LCD screen. This updated screen boosts the resolution from 1.44 million dots to about 2.36 million dots. The change provides better clarity when viewing footage or navigating menus. However, the upgrade is not driven by innovation. It is due to the fact that the original screen used in the FX3 is no longer being produced.
This move is consistent with Sony’s recent approach to camera updates. Other models like the A6400a and A6100a have received similar small adjustments. Though many users hoped for a full second-generation FX3, Sony has chosen to keep the same compact design and features. The FX3a still offers reliable performance and uses Sony’s S-Cinetone color profile, popular with video creators.
The FX3a is now available for pre-order through B&H Photo at $3,900—the same price as the original FX3 when it first launched. Like previous minor updates from Sony, the FX3a might have a limited release in some regions, depending on local rules and supply.
