Fanuc UK Ltd, based in Coventry, has launched the world’s first explosion-proof, ATEX-rated collaborative robot (cobot) designed specifically for industrial painting tasks. The new robot, the CRX-10iA/L PAINT, is ideal for wet spraying, dry powder coating, and various other processes such as adhesive dispensing. It aims to enhance the precision of painting jobs, reduce material waste, improve productivity, and protect workers from harmful paint fumes.
The CRX-10iA/L PAINT has been approved for use in ATEX-certified Cat II Group 2G and 2D areas, making it safe for environments where explosive atmospheres may be present. One of the standout features of this cobot is its ability to work safely alongside human operators without the need for safety fences. This is made possible by its highly sensitive contact-stopping function, ensuring worker safety.
Ease of use is another key aspect of the CRX-10iA/L PAINT. Claude Seiler, Fanuc’s Manager of Products and Application for European Technical Support Robotics, explained: “Many paint shop workers have limited knowledge of robotics. That’s where cobots can help. With the CRX-10iA/L PAINT, there’s no need for expert robot programming skills. It features easy-teach functions and drag-and-drop capabilities that make programming simple.”
Operators can program the cobot in minutes using an icon-based app on a tablet teach pendant. Mr. Seiler elaborated: “Users can manually move the cobot arm to the starting position, save that point, and continue along the paint path. The cobot will then ‘learn’ the entire process, making it incredibly user-friendly. Additionally, users can save and apply paint paths to other parts.”
The Fanuc CRX-10iA/L PAINT is a six-axis robot with an IP67 rating, a maximum payload of 10 kg, and a reach of 1,418 mm, the longest in its class. It offers flexibility with mounting options, including floor, upside-down, and angled placements. Its unique under-flip motion allows users to operate the paint gun in tight spaces. The cobot is also compatible with nearly all automatic end-of-arm tools.
In collaborative mode, the cobot’s maximum speed is 1,000 mm/s. In a closed paint booth, users can activate high-speed mode for up to 2,000 mm/s. Thanks to Fanuc’s robust design, the CRX-10iA/L PAINT is built to operate maintenance-free for up to eight years in painting and coating applications.
