Grainger & Worrall, a leading global manufacturer of complex aluminium sand castings, has been awarded the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. The award recognizes the company’s groundbreaking work in developing lightweight structures for electric vehicles (EVs). The UK-based manufacturer is one of only 46 organizations to receive this high honor, adding to its previous three Queen’s Award wins.
The company’s significant contribution to the quest for lightweight components played a crucial role in its recognition. Grainger & Worrall’s substantial investment in research and development (R&D), combined with its technical expertise, led to the creation of ‘gigacastings.’ These castings reduce vehicle weight while improving structural performance and simplifying assembly.
By developing methods to quickly and consistently produce prototype gigacastings, Grainger & Worrall allows customers to test vehicle designs before committing to costly production equipment. This approach makes gigacastings similar to ‘die-castings’ used in mass production vehicles and off-highway applications.
Pushing Boundaries in Innovation
Duncan Eldridge, CEO of Grainger & Worrall, expressed his pride in the achievement, stating: “Winning the King’s Award for Enterprise is the highest honor a business can receive. We are thrilled to claim our fourth award, joining an elite group of companies with multiple wins. This recognition reflects the hard work, creativity, and expertise of our dedicated team, who continuously push the limits of aluminium casting technology.”
Eldridge added, “The development of prototype gigacastings is a prime example of how we meet industry demands while also committing to sustainability. Innovation is the foundation of our success and will drive our growth both in the UK and across the international markets we serve.”
A Legacy of Excellence
Grainger & Worrall has long been a leader in manufacturing high-performance engine and gearbox castings. Over the years, the company has expanded its product offerings to include castings for electric vehicles, defense, marine, and infrastructure sectors, earning a reputation as one of the world’s top providers in the field.
Following a management buyout in 2023, the company has further enhanced its technical capabilities, attracting major new clients and expanding its business pipeline, especially in sectors seeking advanced aluminium casting solutions.
Looking to the Future
Concluding his remarks, Eldridge said, “The King’s Award for Enterprise is a globally respected accolade that will help us expand our reach in both established and emerging markets. Our success is putting Bridgnorth on the map as a hub for innovative components that will drive sustainable manufacturing for years to come.”
Grainger & Worrall employs a team of 525 at its state-of-the-art facility in Bridgnorth, where it continues to lead in the development of advanced casting technologies for the future.
