Heathrow Airport is urging manufacturers in the Black Country to explore global business opportunities by utilizing its extensive cargo network. The UK’s busiest airport aims to collaborate with the Black Country Chamber of Commerce (BCCC) to better understand the challenges faced by local businesses when exporting and help them tap into international markets.
In celebration of nearly a year of BCCC Platinum Group membership, the two organizations have partnered to host an exporting roundtable. This event will offer a platform for Black Country business leaders to discuss opportunities and strengthen ties within their community. The roundtable, scheduled for 7 May at Wolverhampton-based Zaun Ltd, will provide up to 15 local companies with the chance to share insights on export challenges, key international markets, and barriers to entry. Participants will also contribute to Heathrow’s World of Opportunity Programme, which supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in expanding their international reach.
Building Stronger Regional Connections
Gail Arnold, head of premium membership at BCCC, highlighted the importance of the collaboration. She explained, “Heathrow reached out to us about 10 months ago to explore how they could strengthen their connections with the region, especially given our industrial heritage and robust manufacturing sector. Black Country businesses generate approximately £3.5 billion in exports annually, and Heathrow sees potential for that number to grow.”
She added, “This event offers a unique chance for Black Country manufacturers to form partnerships and address shared challenges in exporting. There are limited spaces available, so we encourage local businesses to register quickly if they want to participate.”
Zaun Ltd, a key player in the UK’s fencing industry, will host the roundtable. The company is the only British manufacturer of woven and welded mesh fencing systems and is the primary supplier of fencing materials at Heathrow. Zaun is also involved in several live projects at the airport.
Supporting Manufacturing Growth
Stewart Plant, sales and marketing director at Zaun, expressed enthusiasm about the event. “We’re excited to host this event, as we believe that by collaborating as trusted partners, we can help the Black Country maintain its position as a manufacturing powerhouse. This partnership supports Heathrow’s vision of becoming the UK’s Gateway to Growth.”
In addition to the roundtable, Black Country SMEs are encouraged to participate in Heathrow Lift Off, a program designed to connect smaller companies with the airport and its major supply chain partners. The initiative provides businesses with the opportunity to present their products and services on topics such as sustainability, passenger experience, data, and technology.
Innovations for a Sustainable Future
Sarah Ralphs, external affairs lead at Heathrow, emphasized the airport’s commitment to innovation. “Lift Off Q2 is now open for applications through Compete For, a free online platform that links buyers and suppliers across the UK. We’re looking for solutions focused on the circular economy and sustainability, including remote biodiversity monitoring, greenspace management, and ways to integrate nature into our terminals. If you’re a Black Country company with innovations in these areas, we encourage you to apply by midday on 30 April.”
This event represents an important opportunity for Black Country manufacturers to expand their global footprint and contribute to Heathrow’s ongoing commitment to sustainable growth.
