Mack Trucks has donated a 2022 Mack LR Electric refuse chassis to Rio Hondo College to support its electric vehicle (EV) technician training program. The contribution marks a significant step in helping students gain experience with heavy-duty electric vehicles, expanding the college’s training beyond light-duty EVs.
The Mack LR Electric is the company’s first fully electric refuse truck. It produces zero tailpipe emissions and operates on high-voltage battery-electric systems ranging from 400 to 600 volts. This is the first time Mack Trucks has partnered with Rio Hondo College.
Supporting Future EV Technicians
“As the industry continues to move toward cleaner fuel options like battery-electric vehicles, this donation will help prepare future technicians for careers in sustainable transportation,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “It also reflects our commitment to both sustainability and education.”
Rio Hondo College has long been a leader in alternative fuel training. The EV program, led by Professor John Frala, has focused on clean vehicle technologies for over 30 years. The college also took part in the Volvo LIGHTS project, which tested battery-electric trucks in real-world fleet settings.
“This donation is a major milestone for us as we move into the heavy-duty electric vehicle space,” said Frala. “Our students will gain hands-on experience with the newest technologies, helping them build the skills needed for the future of vehicle maintenance and repair.”
Meeting the Needs of a Changing Industry
The donation arrives at a critical time, as the transportation sector shifts rapidly toward zero-emission and alternative fuel solutions. With access to this state-of-the-art equipment, Rio Hondo College students can develop the specialized knowledge required to support fleet electrification and new powertrain systems.
Mack Trucks’ donation not only strengthens the college’s EV curriculum but also helps meet the growing demand for skilled EV technicians across the transportation industry.
