recell.store, a UK-based online marketplace for second-hand electric vehicle (EV) batteries and a subsidiary of Altilium, has introduced a new monthly benchmark to track the value of end-of-life EV battery packs. Called the All Battery Index (ABI), the tool aims to bring pricing transparency and consistency to the used battery market, which has been largely unregulated and unclear until now.
The ABI is designed to provide a standardized reference point for evaluating used batteries either for second-life applications or recycling. The May 2025 edition of the index covers battery data from the UK’s 15 best-selling EV models. According to recell.store, the Audi Q4 e-tron and Polestar 2 topped the index, holding the highest residual battery values. These figures are based on real-time market data and recell.store’s internal valuation system.
The company uses a structured grading model to assess battery value. Key factors include state of health (SOH), state of charge (SOC), remaining capacity, battery pack size, and metal recovery potential. Each battery is assigned a grade from R1 to R4, indicating its reuse or recycling potential. For example, R4-rated batteries, with SOH and SOC levels above 80 percent, are deemed suitable for second-life use. In contrast, R1 batteries are considered too degraded for reuse.
Dr. Christian Marston, Chief Operating Officer at Altilium, said the new index is a major step forward for the industry.
“The ABI helps unlock the real value of used EV batteries and brings order to a market that has lacked clarity,” he stated. “We expect it to become the main pricing reference for battery reuse and recycling in the UK.”
Rod Savage, Head of Operations at recell.store, highlighted the broader impact of the tool.
“Our goal is to make end-of-life battery trading as clear and efficient as trading any other commodity,” he said. “The ABI gives the market a strong pricing framework, helping all players in this emerging sector.”
The ABI complements recell.store’s existing services, which include a broad catalogue of used EV batteries for sale across the UK. The platform supports transactions among vehicle dismantlers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), insurers, and other key players in the EV battery lifecycle.
