Swissport has teamed up with Coventry-based company Aurrigo International plc to run the first global pilot of autonomous ground-handling technology at Zurich Airport. This project is an important part of Swissport’s plan to innovate and improve its services.
The pilot involves two key elements: using a digital simulation platform and testing a fully autonomous electric vehicle (EV) in real conditions. The goal is to find new ways to make airside logistics more efficient. By launching this trial at Zurich Airport, Swissport aims to become a leader in next-generation intelligent Ground Service Equipment (iGSE). This move also shows Swissport’s commitment to using advanced technology in ground handling.
Warwick Brady, President and CEO of Swissport International, said, “This partnership is a major step in our journey to innovate. By bringing autonomous technologies into our operations, we want to change ground handling for the better. We aim to improve safety, increase efficiency, and support the sustainability goals of our airline and airport partners around the world.”
The project starts with the introduction of a digital simulation platform at Zurich Airport. This platform, called Auto-Sim, allows Swissport to model ground operations in a virtual environment. It helps identify where automation can be used and supports planning based on data.

The next phase will test Aurrigo’s Auto-DollyTug EV, an autonomous vehicle equipped with 360-degree obstacle detection and advanced situational awareness. It can also load and unload Unit Load Devices (ULDs) automatically. This technology is designed to improve ramp operations and fit smoothly into existing fleet management systems.
This collaboration at Zurich Airport is just the beginning. Swissport and Aurrigo plan to explore other airports for future trials. Swissport will have exclusive operational rights to use Aurrigo’s autonomous technology at the airports it manages. The company will also get early access to Aurrigo’s growing range of autonomous tools, including a remote control and command platform. This will help Swissport expand the use of autonomous equipment across its global network.
Professor David Keene, CEO of Aurrigo International, said, “Working with Swissport is a crucial step for bringing autonomous technology to aviation worldwide. This partnership highlights our shared commitment to innovation and excellence in aviation automation.”
As the aviation industry faces new challenges, Swissport continues to invest in smart technology and sustainable solutions. Through this partnership with Aurrigo, Swissport strengthens its position as a leader in digital transformation for airport ground handling, meeting the changing needs of airlines and airports globally.
