SiTime Corporation has introduced Symphonic, its first mobile clock generator that includes an integrated MEMS resonator, called the SiT30100. This new device delivers precise and reliable clock signals designed for 5G and GNSS chipsets. It also helps reduce power consumption in mobile and IoT devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and asset trackers. SiTime expects this product to open up a $2 billion market over the next five years.
The Symphonic clock generator combines a MEMS resonator with the capabilities of up to four separate timing devices. This design makes system layouts simpler and saves space on circuit boards. Additionally, it includes an integrated temperature sensor. This sensor provides accurate temperature data, which the device uses to adjust its performance through compensation algorithms. As a result, it offers better GPS accuracy and faster signal lock times. It also maintains stable performance even in tough environmental conditions.
Key features of the Symphonic (SiT30100) include a 4-output clock generator that can provide frequencies of 76.8 MHz, 38.4 MHz, or 19.2 MHz from any output. These frequencies support baseband, RF, and GNSS applications. The built-in MEMS resonator eliminates the need for an external resonator. This creates a smaller, single-chip solution that measures only 2.22 mm². The device also features a high-precision temperature-to-digital converter (TDC) with a single-wire UART interface. This allows for system-level temperature compensation and achieves frequency stability as precise as ±0.5 parts per million (ppm).
Symphonic offers excellent performance and dynamic stability even under airflow and sudden temperature changes. It includes multiple output enable pins, allowing users to turn clock outputs on or off to save power and reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). The device operates in temperatures ranging from -30°C to +90°C, with wider ranges available upon request.
