SOWELA Technical Community College now offers an associate degree program in Machine Tool Technology. This program aims to prepare students for careers that are in high demand both locally and across the country.
Students in the machinist track learn how to set up and operate machines to make metal parts, tools, and instruments. In the millwright section of the program, they gain skills to install, maintain, and repair industrial machinery used in factories, power plants, and construction sites. The curriculum also covers essential manufacturing processes, including training on computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines and NCCER certification. These certifications help improve students’ job prospects.
SOWELA notes that this career is a good fit for people who enjoy solving problems and have a technical mindset.
According to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, machinists and millwrights are classified as four-star jobs. This rating highlights occupations with strong job outlooks, good salaries, and manageable education requirements. Millwrights can expect starting wages around $30 per hour, with experienced workers earning $50 per hour or more.
Local companies also provide apprenticeships for graduates of the program. For example, Citgo offers a four-year apprenticeship that credits two years of SOWELA’s Machine Tool classes. This allows graduates to complete the apprenticeship faster and receive pay raises as they demonstrate skill mastery.
Scholarships and financial aid are available for eligible students. Registration is now open for the Fall 2025 semester at SOWELA.
