Westinghouse Electric plans to build 10 large nuclear reactors in the United States, following an executive order from President Donald Trump aimed at speeding up energy project approvals.
Dan Sumner, the interim CEO of Westinghouse, said the company is already in talks with U.S. government officials and industry partners to move the plan forward. He noted that Westinghouse is well-prepared to meet the president’s goals, thanks to its certified reactor designs, established supply chain, and recent experience constructing two AP1000 reactors in Georgia.
President Trump’s executive order directs federal agencies to reduce regulations and speed up the licensing process for reactors and power plants. The order shortens the typical approval timeline from several years to just 18 months.
Sumner emphasized that securing financial support is a key part of the plan. “We are actively communicating with the government, including important discussions with the loan program office, and we understand the critical role financing plays in deploying this model,” he said.
