Despite facing some financial challenges, Nissan is pushing ahead with its development of solid-state batteries. The company plans to launch its first electric vehicle (EV) with this advanced technology by 2028. This new battery promises better range, faster charging, lower cost, and improved design — improvements that could put pressure on other EV makers, including Tesla.
Nissan has been researching solid-state batteries for several years. Christophe Amblard, Nissan’s Director of Product Planning in Europe, confirmed to Auto Express, “Yes, we will be ready for solid-state batteries in 2028.”
However, Amblard emphasized that Nissan will not rush the rollout. He said, “We can’t rush the process. We have to be sure that this technology is reliable and meets our customers’ expectations.” Nissan prefers to take its time to ensure quality rather than risk mistakes.
Why Solid-State Batteries Matter
Solid-state batteries are expected to increase energy density by up to 30% compared to today’s lithium-ion batteries. They are also cheaper to produce and support ultra-fast charging. The key innovation is removing liquid components from the battery cells. This change improves temperature control and allows for more efficient packaging of the battery.
Nissan’s solid-state batteries may also be used in future models like the next-generation GT-R, which could arrive later this decade. In 2023, Nissan revealed the Hyper Force Concept — an electric car boasting 1,341 horsepower. Recent rumors suggest this car might instead be a hybrid, but either way, Nissan is clearly moving forward with electrification.
Amblard also mentioned that these batteries could be used in plug-in hybrid vehicles. “We are not sure where the technology could lead, but we are actively exploring all potential applications,” he said. While Nissan is still uncertain about the full future of this technology, they are open to various possibilities.
A Broader Industry Trend
Nissan’s 2028 goal aligns with plans from other major automakers like Toyota, Stellantis, Volkswagen Group, BYD, and SAIC, who are also developing solid-state batteries. China’s largest battery producer, CATL, plans to start small-scale production by 2027.
It’s not just traditional car makers investing in this technology. Technology companies like Xiaomi and Huawei have recently filed patents, showing they too are exploring solid-state batteries.
Nissan’s progress in solid-state technology signals a major shift in the EV industry — one that could challenge leaders like Tesla in the near future.
