Mercedes-Benz Philippines has introduced two new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the country, aiming to tap into the expanding market for electric cars.
In a recent interview with GMA News Online, Mercedes-Benz Philippines General Manager Maricar Parco revealed that the luxury automaker launched these models last month. They include the E-Class sedan, a mid-size luxury sedan, and the GLC SUV, a mid-size sport utility vehicle.
“Two years ago, we introduced our EQ full electric vehicle lineup,” Parco said. “Now, we are adding plug-in hybrids to complement it, offering the best of both worlds.”
According to Parco, the new PHEV models are priced to be more affordable for Filipino buyers who aspire to own a Mercedes-Benz. The E-Class E350e Plug-In Hybrid is priced at P5.490 million, while the GLC 350e Plug-In Hybrid costs P4.890 million.
She explained how the plug-in hybrids work: “The vehicle starts using an electric motor. When the battery runs out, it switches to gasoline.”
Parco added that the plug-in hybrids serve as a practical middle ground. “It’s been difficult for many to switch immediately from traditional gasoline engines to full electric vehicles.”
Mercedes-Benz is moving towards sustainable luxury and electrification, which is part of the brand’s global strategy.
“Globally, Mercedes-Benz aims to become fully electric by 2039,” Parco said. “We want at least half of our production worldwide to be electric vehicles. However, this depends on how ready each market is.”
She also shared that electric vehicles made up 12% of Mercedes-Benz’s global product mix last year. The company plans to increase this to 15% this year and further expand with plug-in hybrids next year, including in the Philippines.
