BYD Unveils Blade Battery to Set New Standard in EV Safety

by sthv

BYD has introduced its new Blade Battery, a major breakthrough aimed at improving the safety of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The company unveiled the battery during an online event called “The Blade Battery – Unsheathed to Safeguard the World.” During the presentation, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu emphasized the company’s dedication to addressing long-standing safety concerns in battery technology.

A highlight of the event was a nail penetration test, one of the toughest safety evaluations in the industry. The Blade Battery passed this test without emitting smoke or catching fire. Its surface temperature remained between 30°C and 60°C, while traditional ternary lithium batteries exceeded 500°C and ignited under the same conditions.

Professor Ouyang Minggao from Tsinghua University, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out the Blade Battery’s superior safety and energy performance. After years of development, the Blade Battery arranges individual cells in a compact structure that fits directly into the battery pack. This design increases space utilization by over 50% compared to standard lithium iron phosphate batteries.

The Blade Battery also passed several extreme stress tests. It withstood crushing, bending, exposure to 300°C heat, and even being overcharged by 260%—without catching fire or exploding. He Long, Vice President of BYD and Chairman of FinDreams Battery Co., highlighted its key strengths: minimal heat release, high resistance to thermal reactions, and no oxygen release during failure, significantly reducing fire risks.

He also criticized the industry for prioritizing driving range over safety. He explained that efforts to increase energy density have often compromised battery safety. In contrast, BYD’s Blade Battery places safety as a top priority without sacrificing performance.

BYD plans to partner with other manufacturers interested in adopting the Blade Battery technology. Talks with several global car brands are already underway. The upcoming Han EV, BYD’s premium sedan set to launch in June, will feature the Blade Battery. The vehicle will offer a driving range of 605 kilometers and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, combining both performance and safety.
