In Tesla’s latest software version 2025.14, Green discovered a mention of a six-seat Model Y. This is significant because Tesla has only offered a five-seat Model Y so far.
Tesla has confirmed a seven-seat Model Y will arrive soon. This was revealed earlier this month through an email sent to customers. A seven-seater was already available in the earlier version of the Model Y before the recent update, featuring a third row with two small, foldable seats—suitable mostly for small children.
The six-seat Model Y, however, would be entirely new. Unlike previous rumors suggesting it might only be sold in China, Tesla’s code hints that this model will be available worldwide.
The six-seat design is expected to follow a 2+2+2 seating layout, likely with captain’s chairs in the middle row. Tesla’s Model X has been offered with five, six, or seven seats in the past. The six-seat version was the most expensive then, and the same pricing approach may apply to the Model Y. This configuration should offer a good balance of cabin space and easy access to all seats.
The Long Wheelbase Possibility
Extending the wheelbase of the Model Y could make the six-seat version even more attractive. Many automakers, including BMW, Range Rover, and Chevrolet, offer long-wheelbase models to provide extra cabin space, which is highly desired by many buyers today. The addition of a six-seat option makes a longer wheelbase even more appealing.
The main advantage of a six-seat layout over seven seats is that the third row gains more room. This focus on space could mean Tesla might also introduce a longer wheelbase version of the Model Y. Rumors from China mention a version called the E80, which could add about 5.9 inches to the wheelbase. This increase would improve comfort for passengers in both the second and third rows.
