Sandvik Coromant Enhances Parting and Grooving Tool Lineup

by sthv

Sandvik Coromant, a global leader in metal cutting tools, has announced a new expansion of its CoroCut 2 parting and grooving system. The update includes the launch of the new -GL geometry and an improved version of the -CR geometry, both designed to enhance chip control and cutting performance.

CoroCut 2 builds on the success of the long-established CoroCut 1-2 system. Known for its reliable performance across a wide range of applications, the new enhancements aim to improve productivity and reduce waste. These updates are especially useful for shops working with difficult-to-machine steels and performing parting-off tasks that require a strong cutting edge.

The new -GL geometry introduces the most aggressive chip breaker in the CoroCut 2 line. It is particularly effective for machining ISO P materials such as low-carbon steel, clean steels, and cold-forged automotive components. This design offers better chip control, which helps prevent costly machine stoppages.

“It’s no secret that good chip control helps improve efficiency and avoid downtime,” said Jenny Claus, Product Manager for Parting and Grooving at Sandvik Coromant. “But not every insert can handle challenging materials. The -GL geometry was created to fix that.”

Designed for Automation

The -GL geometry also supports increased automation. Shorter chips reduce tangling and machine stops, which means less manual intervention and more consistent production.

The updated -CR geometry is optimized for high-feed parting-off and intermittent cuts. It works well across many materials and features a strong cutting edge with a wiper design that boosts both productivity and component quality.

“All our parting geometries include the wiper design,” said Fredrik Selin, Product Application Specialist at Sandvik Coromant. “This allows for higher feed rates without compromising surface finish or chip control. A simple rule applies: double the feed rate and keep the same surface finish—or keep the feed rate and double the finish quality.”

Improved Stability and Tool Life

Stability is crucial in parting and grooving. The biggest challenge is to hold the insert securely and limit any movement. Both the -GL and -CR geometries use Sandvik Coromant’s proven rail interface, which improves insert positioning and enhances stability under side forces.

These geometries are also produced using the company’s patented FlashLight technology. This method delivers a more consistent edge line and better tool quality, leading to longer and more predictable tool life.
