Renesas has introduced a new microprocessor in its RZ/A series called the RZ/A3M. This chip features a large 128MB of on-device DDR3L memory and an Arm Cortex-A55 core that runs at speeds up to 1GHz.
Daryl Khoo from Renesas said, “We are excited to launch the RZ/A3M, the first product in the RZ family with built-in large memory. It is designed to deliver high-quality video and animation performance for human-machine interfaces while keeping system costs low.” He added that the chip aims to provide a smooth, real-time graphics experience. It also offers ease of design and cost efficiency, helping customers create advanced HMI solutions quickly.
The RZ/A3M belongs to the RZ/A line of processors, which are made to run real-time operating systems (RTOS). It is built around a single 64-bit Arm Cortex-A55 processor core operating at up to 1GHz. Like the existing RZ/A3UL, it has 128kB of on-chip static RAM (SRAM). What makes the RZ/A3M different is its 128MB of DDR3L memory built directly into the chip package, called a system-in-package (SiP).
Having the SDRAM on-device makes it easier to use the RZ/A3M in HMI applications. Designers do not need to create a high-speed connection to external memory modules. At the same time, the chip offers enough memory to support rich and attractive user interfaces. The new processor also supports quad-SPI buses for NAND and NOR flash memory. Renesas designed its pin layout to simplify printed circuit board (PCB) routing, even for dual-layer boards.
To enhance its role in driving HMI displays, the RZ/A3M includes an integrated LCD controller. It supports WXGA resolution panels (1280×800) and offers both parallel RGB and four-lane MIPI Display Serial Interface (DSI) connections. The chip also has a hardware-accelerated 2D graphics engine. Other built-in peripherals include SPI, I2C, SDHI, USB 2.0, and I2S interfaces. Additionally, it features an integrated temperature sensor and timer.
More details about the RZ/A3M are available on Renesas’ official product page. The processor is now in volume production, with prices starting at $21.35 for single units. Renesas has also introduced a “Winning Design” kit. This kit combines the RZ/A3M with other company components to build human-machine interfaces for appliances.
