Oerlikon has announced a CHF 40 million investment to build a new global innovation and production center at Campus Reichhold in Aargau. The company recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction. The new facility will combine thermal spray system development and coating services under one roof.
The new campus will bring together about 250 skilled employees who are currently spread across three sites in Switzerland. It will integrate research and development, engineering, production, and customer services in a single, modern location. Construction is set to finish by the fourth quarter of 2026, with operations expected to begin in early 2027.
Commitment to Swiss Roots
Professor Dr. Michael Suess, Executive Chairman of Oerlikon, said the project highlights the company’s strong ties to Switzerland.
“This investment reflects our long-term commitment to Switzerland, where our roots run deep,” Suess said. “The new Campus Reichhold will support growth in our aerospace and general industry businesses by unifying our entire value chain. It also strengthens our reputation as a top employer in the region.”
Focus on Aerospace and Advanced Testing
The center will mainly serve customers in the aerospace, automotive, and general industrial sectors. One of its highlights is a unique test rig designed for aerospace turbine components. This tool will help test next-generation thermal spray coatings in real-world conditions.
At the campus, Oerlikon plans to develop new thermal spray and laser-based Direct Energy Deposition (DED) technologies. These advanced coatings improve the heat resistance, durability, and corrosion protection of high-performance components. For instance, the coatings can allow jet turbines to run safely at temperatures up to 1,200°C, helping improve fuel efficiency by up to 9%.
Sustainability Goals
Sustainability will play a key role in the new facility. The campus will feature measures to reduce environmental impact in areas such as energy use, mobility, and resource management. The building’s design reflects Oerlikon’s goal to lead in sustainable innovation.
