Valmet will carry out a major rebuild of Sylvamo’s PM 2 paper machine at its Eastover mill. The project includes a new headbox, machine section upgrades, and Industrial Internet solutions. The upgraded machine is set to start operations by the end of 2026.
The order was recorded in Valmet’s Q1 2025 bookings. The financial details remain confidential.
Commitment to Competitive Paper Production
Pat Wilczynski, Sylvamo’s Senior Vice President of Operational Excellence, emphasized the strategic importance of the investment.
“This rebuild reinforces our focus on uncoated freesheet production and maintaining our low-cost assets. Eastover is among the world’s most efficient paper mills, and this modernization will keep it technologically advanced for years to come,” Wilczynski said.
Gregory Van Handel, Valmet’s Corporate Account Manager for North America, highlighted the partnership’s benefits.

Key Upgrades in the Rebuild
The project includes:
- A new OptiFlo Gap headbox for improved sheet formation.
- A rebuilt forming section with OptiFormer Gap technology, featuring shoe and blade advancements.
- Enhancements to stock preparation and other machine sections.
Digital and Automation Solutions
Valmet will also provide:
- Industrial Internet support, including remote expert assistance from Valmet Performance Center.
- Paper machine clothing and spare parts packages.
Automation upgrades, such as:
- Valmet IQ Steam Profiler
- Valmet IQ Dilution Profiler
- Expanded Valmet DNA Machine Monitoring system.
The 9,450 mm-wide (wire) machine produces fine paper grades. The rebuild aims to enhance efficiency and maintain Sylvamo’s leadership in cost-effective paper production.
