ReNew Power, one of India’s leading renewable energy companies, is making a major comeback in Andhra Pradesh with a ₹22,000 crore investment. The company plans to build India’s largest renewable energy complex in Anantapur district. This marks ReNew’s return to the state after a five-year pause.
The project will be developed in phases. It will include a 1,800 MW solar power plant, a 1,000 MW wind energy facility, and a 2 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS). ReNew Power will also build a 100-kilometre extra-high voltage transmission line to carry the power to the grid.
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for May 16 and will be attended by Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for IT, Electronics, Communications, and Human Resources Development.
First Phase Details
In the first phase of construction, ReNew Power will install a 587 MW solar unit, a 250.8 MW wind plant, and a 415 MWh battery storage system. The remaining capacity will be added in later phases.
This project is part of Andhra Pradesh’s integrated clean energy policy, introduced in October 2024. It is the largest single renewable energy initiative in India so far.
Policy Revival Sparks Growth
ReNew Power had halted its projects in Andhra Pradesh after a policy shift in 2019. The previous government reviewed and tried to renegotiate existing power purchase agreements (PPAs), causing delays and legal disputes. As a result, around 5.2 GW worth of solar and wind projects—affecting ReNew and other developers like ACME Solar and Greenko—were stalled from 2019 to 2024.
The new government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has restarted efforts to attract green energy investments. ReNew’s return is being seen as a positive sign that investor trust in the state’s renewable energy policies is being restored.
ReNew Power’s Bigger Goals
Founded in 2011 by Sumant Sinha, ReNew Power has grown into a major force in the global renewable energy industry. As of August 2024, it operates more than 15.6 GW of renewable energy across India. The company is helping drive India’s shift away from fossil fuels.
ReNew aims to increase its capacity to 50 GW by 2030, supporting India’s national goal of 500 GW in renewable energy. The company is also investing heavily in green hydrogen production. It plans to produce 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually, contributing to India’s clean energy future.
With its focus on large-scale projects, innovation, and sustainability, ReNew Power is positioning itself not just as a national leader, but as a global player in renewable energy.
