CenterPoint Energy Foundation Boosts Community Resilience with Generator Donations

by sthv

CenterPoint Energy has donated a backup trailer generator to the Matagorda County Office of Emergency Management. This donation is part of its new Community Generator Donation Program, which aims to improve local emergency preparedness.

Through this program, the CenterPoint Energy Foundation will fund more than 20 backup generators across its 12-county Greater Houston service area. The goal is to provide at least one generator—or similar emergency support—to every county.

The company is working closely with local emergency management offices and county and city officials. Together, they are identifying the most important sites to place these generators. This coordination ensures that the equipment will be used where it can help the most people during emergencies.

This effort is part of CenterPoint’s Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative. The donation program is supported by a $5 million grant from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation. The Foundation is funded by company shareholders, so customers will not see any changes to their bills.

“These generators will help make our communities stronger and better prepared,” said June Deadrick, vice president of community relations at CenterPoint Energy. “Today we are proud to support Matagorda County, and soon we’ll be announcing more locations. Each generator can power a large building and will play a critical role during storms or emergencies.”

The backup generators will provide power to essential services when the main power supply is lost. The facilities that receive them will act as emergency hubs. They may offer medical aid, food and water distribution, cooling centers, charging stations, and other vital services during a crisis.

Local Leaders Help Choose Locations
CenterPoint is depending on local input to decide where to place the generators. County and city leaders, along with emergency managers, help select the most critical locations.

“Matagorda County is thankful for this partnership,” said County Judge Bobby Seiferman. “We face more severe weather events each year, and this generator will help keep our services running when people need them most. We truly appreciate CenterPoint’s commitment to our community.”

CenterPoint will continue to work with local leaders to make sure the generators are matched to the specific needs of each facility. The company’s goal is to have all the generators installed and ready by June 1, 2025—before the start of the 2025 hurricane season.

CenterPoint also plans to make similar donations in other counties throughout the Greater Houston area in the coming weeks.
