Rolls-Royce has secured a key role in Canada’s River-class destroyer program. The company will supply important systems for the first group of these ships. This program is part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. It is the country’s largest naval construction effort since World War II.
Each ship will have three main components from Rolls-Royce. These include the MT30 gas turbine for propulsion, the Mission Bay Handling System, and mtu Series 4000 diesel generators.
Bruce Lennie, Vice President of Government Relations at Rolls-Royce, said, “We are honored to support the Royal Canadian Navy’s new surface combatant program. Our power and handling systems will boost the fleet’s operational strength and help Canada’s maritime security.”
The program plans to build up to 15 ships. Construction of the first three ships, called Batch One, began in April. Rolls-Royce has agreements with Irving Shipbuilding, the main contractor, to supply the MT30 turbines and the handling system. The supply of diesel generators is managed by Canadian partner Wajax Power Systems and is near final approval.
Lee Fromson, Irving Shipbuilding’s Vice President of Supply Chain and Quality, said, “We value our partnership with Rolls-Royce. We trust their reliable systems and expertise as we build these next-generation ships for Canada’s navy.”
The River-class design is based on the British Type 26 warship by BAE Systems. This design is also being adapted for the UK and Australia as the Hunter Class Frigate. These ships will also use Rolls-Royce technology.
