West Springfield DPW Rolls Out New Pothole Repair Machine

by sthv

The West Springfield Department of Public Works (DPW) has introduced a new tool to combat potholes across the town. The new equipment, called a drag box, is designed to repair larger sections of damaged roads more efficiently.

Town officials say the effort is part of a broader plan to improve road conditions and respond faster to residents’ concerns.

“We’re out there every day, all day long, filling holes,” said Trevor Wood, Director of Public Works.

DPW crews are currently focused on patching potholes, with many residents regularly alerting the town about road issues. However, Mayor Will Reichelt encourages residents to contact the DPW directly rather than relying on social media posts.

“Complaining in forums or tagging me in posts about potholes on Morgan Road isn’t as helpful as calling the DPW,” Reichelt said.

To streamline reports, the town has created a dedicated email address for pothole complaints. Town officials say if the weather allows, repairs can often be completed within 36 to 48 hours of a report.

“We’re not everywhere all the time,” Reichelt explained. “There are more than 100 miles of road in West Springfield. If you drive a certain area and notice a problem, let us know. That’s the easiest way for us to fix it.”

The new email alerts go to multiple people within the DPW, including the director, crew members, and foremen responsible for repairs. Reichelt said daytime emails are especially helpful, as someone can often be sent out right away.

To handle more severe road damage, the town has purchased a drag box. This machine replaces the traditional shovel-and-rake method and creates a smoother, more durable surface.

In a recent social media post, Mayor Reichelt showed how the drag box helps lay fresh asphalt across a broader area, making it ideal for roads that have been neglected or delayed in routine maintenance.

“You fill it up, adjust it to the height you want, and drag it along,” said Wood. “We use this for the worst areas.”

On Tuesday, DPW crews were seen using the drag box along Morgan Road near Route 5. The team also used it to repair Lyncosky Drive nearly two weeks ago, showing promising results.

Town officials are optimistic that the new equipment will lead to faster, smoother, and longer-lasting road repairs throughout West Springfield.
