Liebherr Container Cranes has unveiled a new generation of rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, offering five updated base models designed for greater efficiency and lower emissions. The expanded range includes fully electric, hybrid, and variable speed generator options to suit different operational needs.
The two fully electric models are the RTG-CB, which uses a conductor bar for power, and the ERTG-CRD, which is powered via a cable reel. Both operate with zero local emissions.
For customers seeking hybrid solutions, Liebherr offers the RTG-HC, which uses supercapacitors paired with a smaller diesel generator, and the RTG-HB, which incorporates battery storage. These hybrid models aim to reduce fuel use and maintenance costs, while still delivering strong performance.
The fifth model in the series, the RTG-VSG, features a variable speed generator. This setup improves fuel efficiency by adjusting engine speed to match power demand.
All five models are equipped with Liebherr’s signature eight-rope reeving system. This system enhances load stability and reduces sway during crane operations. Each crane is also built with the company’s Liduro drive system.
Buyers can customize the RTGs with various automation features. These include options for fully autonomous operation or remote control, depending on site requirements.
Charlie McCarthy, a container cranes engineer at Liebherr, said the updated RTG line offers both flexibility and sustainability.
“Our range of RTGs offers flexibility and choice to meet diverse operational requirements,” he said. “Our electric RTGs operate with zero local emissions, while our hybrid models deliver exceptional performance along with significant reductions in emissions, running costs, and maintenance.”
