The Welsh government has announced a £2 million equity investment in the tidal energy company Inyanga Marine Energy Group, reinforcing the country’s commitment to renewable energy. The investment, revealed by First Minister Eluned Morgan at the Marine Energy Wales Conference in Cardiff, will support the testing of improved tidal turbines in real sea conditions at the Morlais tidal energy site off Ynys Mon, Anglesey.
This funding will also help enhance the turbines, allowing them to generate up to 60% more energy. The upgraded turbines will power the majority of tidal energy projects planned for the Morlais site, an area known for its strong tidal currents. Covering 35 square kilometers, the site has the potential to generate enough electricity to power over 180,000 homes when fully developed. It is also one of Europe’s largest approved tidal energy projects.
The Welsh government has pledged to make Wales a global hub for emerging tidal technologies. This investment is in line with First Minister Morgan’s priorities of strengthening the economy, creating a greener future, and addressing the climate crisis.
A Strong Commitment to Clean Energy
First Minister Eluned Morgan stated, “This investment is a significant step for Wales’ clean energy future. Tidal energy provides reliable, clean power while creating quality jobs in coastal communities. By supporting innovation, we’re ensuring Wales leads the way in marine energy technology. These improved turbines will help make tidal energy more practical and accelerate the global shift from fossil fuels. After my visit to the Wind Europe conference in Copenhagen last month, today’s investment shows how serious we are about renewable energy and its crucial role in meeting our future energy needs.”
Innovative Technology at the Forefront
Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, commented, “Our patented HydroWing tidal array technology is pushing the boundaries of renewable energy, unlocking the full potential of ocean tides as a predictable and sustainable energy source. This £2 million investment from the Welsh government completes the financing for the demonstration phase of our technology.”
Parkinson added, “The tidal energy project at Morlais is the largest approved project of its kind in the world, positioning Wales as a global leader in renewable energy. Tidal energy has the potential to supply 11% of the UK’s total energy needs, and today’s announcement marks a key milestone in that journey.”
A Boost for the Local Economy
Andy Billcliff, CEO of Menter Môn Morlais Ltd, said, “We’re proud to see Inyanga reach this milestone as they prepare to launch their HydroWing demonstration project within the Morlais zone. This is a major achievement not just for the tidal energy sector, but for Anglesey and the broader Welsh economy.”
He concluded, “This development showcases how our natural resources can drive innovation, create high-quality jobs, and help Wales achieve its ‘net zero’ goals. It’s an exciting moment for renewable energy in Wales.”
