Tata Power has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to establish a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai. The project is set to be completed within the next two years.
This advanced system, which includes “black start” capabilities, will ensure the rapid restoration of power to key infrastructure, including the metro, hospitals, airports, and data centers, in case of grid failures. By doing so, it will prevent widespread outages and strengthen the resilience of the city’s power grid.
The BESS will improve reactive power management, which helps optimize performance during peak demand. This will further stabilize Mumbai’s electrical network and manage high loads, ensuring a steady power supply even during times of high demand.
Additionally, the system will lower electricity purchase costs by storing energy during off-peak hours and releasing it during peak times, which could help reduce consumer tariffs. It will also delay the need for costly infrastructure upgrades by efficiently managing load fluctuations and utilizing stored energy.
Apart from boosting grid reliability, the BESS will offer essential services like frequency regulation and voltage support, increasing overall grid stability. The system will also store excess solar energy generated during the day for use during peak hours, facilitating the integration of renewable energy and promoting the use of green power. The project will also help Tata Power meet its energy storage requirements.
The 100 MW system will be spread across 10 strategically chosen locations, mainly near major load centers in Mumbai. It will be monitored and controlled centrally from Tata Power’s Power System Control Center (PSCC).
